Ehrenfels Castle Ruins: short History

(Hundreds of years of history summed up into a couple paragraphs…your welcome)

Built in the 12th Century the remnants of Ehrenfels Castle can can be found Situated high upon a hill overlooking the Rheingau region in Germany, it was (as most castles along the Rhine) strategically positioned to control trade and collect tolls, which it did… for centuries.(Think Robber Barons.) around 1350 it was expanded and then in 15th and 16 centuries expanded again. Then the 30 year war came.

- Despite several sieges and frequent changes of ownership during the 30 Years' War (1618-1648) it somehow avoided complete destruction.

-After the war it returned somewhat to its former glory only to be occupied later by the French troops of Louis XIV in 1688. Unfortunately, Ehrenfels Castle became a casualty of the Napoleonic Wars. The invading French forces seized control of the castle, using it as a base. Upon leaving it, they blew it up and set it on fire in1689. Desolate and ravaged its been a ruin ever since.
